Frequently Asked Questions

The K87 and K67 are closely related large-diaphragm capsule families, but they are associated with different circuit requirements and microphone designs. The K67 is strongly associated with the U67 valve microphone, where the capsule is used with circuitry that helps shape and control its response. The K87 is associated with U87-style FET microphones and is configured for that multi-pattern electrical system. In many discussions, “K67-style” is used broadly to describe this acoustic family, but the electrical details and backplate connections can differ. The practical takeaway is that a K87 and K67 should not be judged only by name. The final microphone sound depends on how the capsule is wired, tuned, and matched to the circuit.
Edge-terminated and centre-terminated capsules differ in where the diaphragm is electrically connected and mechanically referenced. In a centre-terminated capsule, the conductive diaphragm is typically connected near the centre, which is associated with designs such as the M7 and K47 families. In an edge-terminated capsule, the diaphragm connection is made around the outer edge, as seen in CK12-style designs. These construction choices influence diaphragm behaviour, tuning options, pattern behaviour, and the final tone of the microphone. It is too simple to say one type is better. Centre-terminated capsules are often associated with strong midrange and classic vocal weight, while edge-terminated capsules are often associated with openness and extended detail, but the actual result depends on the whole capsule and microphone design.

2 reviews for K67 Capsule

  1. CHARLES AUSTIN –

I was only expecting an incremental improvement but with a couple cap changes and a transformer upgrade the K6 capsule in the MP Fox 460 circuit shooting for a U67 sound, I was stunned by the sound at how rich, clear and articulate it sounded. Never used a U67, but the warmth and fullness with clear delicate soft presence of the mic make it the go to of my 20 assorted mics. I used AI to recommend the upgrades to shoot for the U67 sound. I was of the opinion that a U47 sound would best compliment my voice, but after hearing this upgrade I couldn’t stop going through my list of songs to test the different ranges and intensities and it overwhelmed in every category.

  2. Michael Wagner (verified owner) –

This thing genuinely floored me. The microphone I put this capsule into instantly became my favorite vocal mic upon listening to the very first recording test. About a year later, that still remains true. An absolute work of art.
