Frequently Asked Questions

The K47 and M7 are both centre-terminated large-diaphragm capsule families associated with classic U47-style microphone history, but they differ in construction and materials. Traditional M7 capsules used PVC diaphragms, while K47 capsules are associated with later construction using more stable diaphragm materials. The M7 is often discussed for its early vintage character and smoothness, while the K47 is commonly associated with a robust, present, mid-forward sound. However, these descriptions are generalisations. Modern M7-style and K47-style capsules vary between makers, and the finished microphone tone also depends on the valve or FET circuit, transformer, grille, and tuning. The key difference is historical construction lineage rather than a simple better-or-worse choice.
Edge-terminated and centre-terminated capsules differ in where the diaphragm is electrically connected and mechanically referenced. In a centre-terminated capsule, the conductive diaphragm is typically connected near the centre, which is associated with designs such as the M7 and K47 families. In an edge-terminated capsule, the diaphragm connection is made around the outer edge, as seen in CK12-style designs. These construction choices influence diaphragm behaviour, tuning options, pattern behaviour, and the final tone of the microphone. It is too simple to say one type is better. Centre-terminated capsules are often associated with strong midrange and classic vocal weight, while edge-terminated capsules are often associated with openness and extended detail, but the actual result depends on the whole capsule and microphone design.

This is a great question. While this is not an exhaustive list, the following are some well-known microphones and microphone families that may benefit from installing a high-quality BeesNeez M7 capsule.

The M7 capsule is one of the most important capsule designs in the history of studio recording. It was famously used in early versions of the Neumann U 47 and M 49, as well as a number of classic German microphone designs. The BeesNeez M7 is designed to recreate the distinctive sonic character of this historically important capsule.

The BeesNeez M7 is particularly well suited to microphones based on classic U47 and M49 designs, as well as DIY builds using compatible tube or FET circuitry. Its tonal character is generally associated with a smooth, warm presentation, strong lower-midrange response, and a natural, non-aggressive top end. BeesNeez describes its M7 as a mellow and sweet capsule with the characteristic lower-mid strength associated with the original design.

Some microphones and microphone families that may benefit include:

  • Neumann — U 47, M 49, U 48 and other vintage M7-based microphones
  • Neumann/Gefell — CMV 563 and compatible M7-based microphone systems
  • Microtech Gefell — selected large-diaphragm microphones based on the M7 capsule design
  • Flea — U47, M49 and other M7-style microphones
  • Peluso — 47 and M49-style microphones
  • Warm Audio — selected U47/M49-style microphones and compatible DIY platforms
  • Advanced Audio — selected U47 and M49-style microphones
  • DIY U47-style microphones — tube and FET builds designed around an M7-type capsule
  • DIY M49-style microphones — builds using compatible M49 circuitry and headbasket designs

The Neumann U 47 and M 49 are the most obvious applications for an M7 capsule. The original U 47 was introduced with the M7 capsule before Neumann transitioned to the K47 later in its production history. The M7 was also central to the original M49 design.

The Neumann/Gefell CMV 563 is another historically significant M7 application. The CMV 563 used interchangeable capsules, including the M7, and the M7 was also used in other classic Neumann microphone designs.

For modern microphone owners, an M7 replacement can be particularly interesting when the existing capsule has become damaged, degraded, or simply does not provide the desired tonal character. It can also be an effective upgrade for certain U47 and M49-style microphones that were originally supplied with a less authentic or lower-cost capsule.

For DIY builders, the BeesNeez M7 is an excellent choice for U47 and M49-inspired projects. The capsule is manufactured by BeesNeez in Australia and is specifically intended for replacement and DIY applications.

As with any capsule replacement, compatibility should be evaluated before installation. The microphone's polarization voltage, capsule dimensions, mounting system, headbasket, circuit topology, and transformer should all be considered. A capsule upgrade will produce the best results when the capsule and electronics are properly matched as a complete system.

It is also worth noting that an M7 and K47 are closely related but are not sonically identical. Both are associated with the classic U47 sound, but the M7's character is generally smoother and more mellow, while the K47 tends to offer a somewhat more pronounced low-mid and bottom-end response. Choosing between them should therefore be based on the microphone's existing circuit and the desired tonal result.

  1. Elisa Nicolas –

I had Jim Jacobsen at JJ Audio build an M49 clone for me. It has the AMI BV11, a sub mini 5840 tube and Jim recommended the Beesneez M7 capsule. This is the best vocal microphone I own now. I have several high end mics. (U87, 251 clone) Sublime highs and midrange. Handles dynamic vocalists but especially females magically. Highly recommended.

  2. Mark Howard (verified owner) –

Great M7 capsule. Amazing craftsmanship. Arrived quickly and well packed. Thank you.
