Isobel

(3 customer reviews)

The BeesNeez Isobel is a finely crafted, large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone, proudly made in Australia. Combining vintage-inspired tonality with modern build quality, it delivers an exceptionally clean, musical, and balanced sound—at an accessible price point.

Key Features:

  • Inspired Tone
Drawing inspiration from microphones such as Neumann U87 and AKG C414, the Isobel offers a well-balanced response that avoids brightness or harshness while still having an airy high end, making it versatile across a range of recording applications.
  • Precision Capsule Design
Equipped with the Beesneez K67 microphone capsule, a meticulous reproduction of the original K67. The Isobel offers accurate and detailed audio capture with a fast transient response and notably low self-noise.
  • Exceptional Build Quality
The mic’s body and base are machined from a high grade brass, chosen for its high copper content that enhances rejection and shielding. After precision machining, components undergo professional powder coating. The integrated head grille—cut directly into the body—adds both structural rigidity and refined aesthetics.
  • Trusted Studio Performance
With its cardioid polar pattern and strong common-mode rejection (CMRR), the Isobel delivers clean signal capture, making it ideal for vocals, voiceovers, stringed instruments, woodwinds, room ambience, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

The BeesNeez Isobel is a versatile large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone designed to provide a detailed, balanced, and natural sound across a wide range of recording applications. Its fixed-cardioid pattern makes it particularly well suited to situations where a focused pickup pattern and consistent off-axis response are desirable.

The Isobel can be an excellent choice for:

  • Vocals — The Isobel's detailed and balanced response makes it well suited to both male and female vocals. Its cardioid pattern helps focus the microphone on the vocalist while reducing sound arriving from behind.
  • Voice-over and spoken word — The clean FET design and controlled low-frequency response make the Isobel a strong choice for voice-over, podcasting, narration, and broadcast applications.
  • Acoustic guitar and stringed instruments — The microphone captures detail and transient information while retaining a natural representation of the instrument.
  • Drum overheads — The Isobel can provide a clear, detailed representation of cymbals and the overall drum kit while maintaining a focused stereo or mono image.
  • Guitar cabinets — Its high maximum SPL capability allows it to be positioned in front of guitar amplifiers and other relatively loud sources.
  • Woodwind and brass instruments — The extended frequency response and detailed upper-midrange can capture the articulation and character of instruments such as saxophone, clarinet, and other winds.
  • Room and ambient recording — Although the Isobel is fixed cardioid, its controlled off-axis response can be useful when you want some room sound while maintaining a defined sound source.
  • General studio recording — The Isobel is an excellent all-purpose microphone for engineers who want a dependable FET condenser that can move easily between vocals, instruments, and other studio sources.

One of the advantages of the Isobel is that it does not rely on a particular vintage application. Its design draws inspiration from classic large-diaphragm microphones such as the Neumann U87 and AKG C414, while using the BeesNeez BN-K67 capsule and a modern FET circuit. The result is a microphone that can be used as a versatile studio workhorse rather than being limited to a single type of source.

The fixed-cardioid design is also an important part of the Isobel's character. By concentrating on one carefully designed pickup pattern, the microphone can provide a consistent and predictable response without the additional circuitry required for multiple polar patterns.

For vocal recording, the Isobel can be particularly useful when you want a sound that is clear, present, detailed, and natural without the additional harmonic coloration associated with a tube microphone. This makes it a useful complement to the BeesNeez tube microphones in a professional studio.

Ultimately, the Isobel is best thought of as a versatile studio FET microphone. It can handle everything from intimate vocals and voice-over to acoustic instruments, guitar cabinets, drum overheads, and many other sources, making it a strong choice when you need one microphone that can perform a wide range of studio duties.

The BeesNeez Isobel is designed to provide a detailed, open and airy sound while avoiding excessive brightness or harshness. The BeesNeez K67 capsule provides fast transient response and detailed mid and high frequencies, giving vocals plenty of clarity and presence without intentionally emphasizing the frequencies that can make sibilance sound harsh.

This makes the Isobel particularly well suited to vocals, voice-over, narration and spoken-word recording, where clarity and intelligibility are important. The microphone's fixed-cardioid pattern also provides a consistent and predictable response, making it easier to control the sound through microphone placement.

Compared with a microphone that has a pronounced high-frequency boost, the Isobel is designed to provide a more balanced presentation. The goal is to retain the air and detail of a large-diaphragm condenser without making the upper frequencies unnecessarily aggressive.

For vocalists who have moderate sibilance, the Isobel can provide an excellent balance between presence and smoothness. However, sibilance is affected by the individual vocalist, microphone distance, recording angle, room acoustics and preamp settings, so no microphone can completely eliminate it for every performer.

For particularly sibilant voices, simple microphone technique can make a significant difference. Moving slightly farther from the microphone, changing the angle of the vocalist to the capsule, or positioning the microphone slightly off-axis can reduce excessive “S,” “T” and “SH” energy before it reaches the recording chain. However many sibilant artists would more often choose the Elly or the Oliver Fet, as these capsule have no emphasis in the sibilance region.

If additional control is required, a conventional de-esser can be used during recording or mixing. The Isobel is not designed to eliminate the need for de-essing; rather, its voicing is intended to provide clarity and high-frequency detail without unnecessary harshness.

In short, the Isobel is designed to give vocals clarity, presence and air while maintaining a smooth and balanced upper-frequency response. For many voices this can provide an excellent starting point, with little corrective processing required to achieve a natural and detailed vocal sound.

Yes. The BeesNeez Isobel is a large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone and requires 48V phantom power to operate its internal electronics.

Phantom power is supplied by an audio interface, mixing console, microphone preamp, or other compatible recording equipment through the balanced XLR cable. Make sure phantom power is switched on before recording with the Isobel.

Firstly , for reference: Over the years I owned the TLM 49, Miktek CV4, Sony C80, and had the Manley Reference Cardioid for the last 5 years as my main vocal mic. All of these are great in their own right. But the ISOBEL has now become my main vocal mic! It performs on a level that suggest that it cost way more than it does. This is a game changer! I am recording R&B, Hip-Hop, Gospel, and Voice Over work through the Portico II Channel strip and the Symphony Desktop. The sound is superb and I am about to purchase another BeesNeez mic soon being that this has been such an amazing experience! I have mixed raw vocals sent to me from a musicians using u87s and 414s. The description of this mic being a blend of both is spot on! It is a beautiful hybrid of those mics from what I am used to hearing from them, to create something totally brand new and innovative. Perfect for my applications!

  2. ted (verified owner) –

The Isobel is a beautifully smooth & sweet microphone that is excellent value for money.
