Frequently Asked Questions

The BeesNeez Elly is a versatile large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pattern, designed to provide a warm, smooth, and detailed sound. The BeesNeez K47 cardioid capsule gives the microphone a character associated with classic K47/U47-style microphones, while the FET circuit provides the speed, clarity, and reliability of a modern solid-state design.

The Elly is particularly well suited to:

  • Vocals — The Elly's warm and controlled character makes it an excellent choice for both male and female vocals. Its gentle presence lift helps provide clarity and intelligibility while maintaining a smooth overall sound.
  • Voice-over and spoken word — The combination of the K47 capsule and FET electronics produces a clear, articulate voice without excessive high-frequency emphasis. This makes the Elly particularly well suited to narration, voice-over, podcasting, and broadcast applications.
  • Acoustic guitar — The microphone captures the body and warmth of an acoustic guitar while retaining enough upper-midrange detail to preserve pick and finger articulation.
  • Electric guitar and guitar cabinets — The Elly can handle relatively high sound-pressure levels and its smooth high-frequency response can work particularly well when a guitar amplifier sounds overly bright or aggressive.
  • Drum overheads — The K47-based response provides a natural representation of the overall kit while the cardioid pattern allows some control over room sound and unwanted spill.
  • Room and ambient recording — Although the Elly is fixed cardioid, its controlled pickup pattern can be useful when you want to capture some room character while maintaining a defined sound source.
  • Other acoustic instruments — The Elly can be used successfully on instruments such as piano, strings, percussion, woodwinds, and brass where a warm but detailed condenser microphone is desirable.

One of the Elly's strengths is its ability to provide warmth without sacrificing clarity. The Beesneez K47 capsule has a relatively smooth response through the midrange with a gentle presence lift above approximately 2 kHz. This can help vocals and acoustic instruments remain clear and present without producing an excessively bright or aggressive sound.

The Elly can also be a particularly good choice when recording a source that is naturally bright or sibilant. Its voicing is designed to be more forgiving than some modern, aggressively voiced condenser microphones, while still providing the detail expected from a large-diaphragm FET microphone.

For vocal recording, the Elly is especially useful when you want a full, warm, intimate vocal sound with enough presence to sit naturally in a mix. The fixed-cardioid design also makes microphone placement straightforward and predictable.

Ultimately, the Elly is best thought of as a versatile, vocal-friendly K47-style FET microphone. It combines the tonal character associated with the classic K47/U47 family with the speed, reliability, and high-SPL capability of a modern FET design, making it suitable for vocals, voice-over, acoustic instruments, guitar, drums, and many other studio applications.

The BeesNeez Elly and the vintage Neumann U 47 share an important part of their sonic heritage, particularly the use of a K47-style large-diaphragm capsule. However, they are fundamentally different microphone designs. The Elly is a modern, transformer-balanced FET microphone that draws on the tonal qualities of the classic U 47 while offering the simplicity, reliability, and fast response of a solid-state design.

The main differences can be summarized as follows:

  • Capsule: The vintage U 47 used the M7 and, later, K47 capsule; the Elly uses the BeesNeez K47 cardioid capsule.
  • Amplifier: The U 47 uses the legendary VF 14 tube; the Elly uses a modern FET amplifier.
  • Transformer: The U 47 uses the original Neumann BV 08 transformer; the Elly uses a BeesNeez E-Core single-spool transformer.
  • Polar pattern: The original U 47 provides cardioid and omni; the Elly is fixed cardioid.
  • Power: The U 47 requires its dedicated tube-microphone power supply; the Elly operates from standard 48 V phantom power.
  • Maximum SPL: The Elly is rated at approximately 130 dB SPL, making it suitable for a wide variety of studio sources. ([beesneezproaudio.com](https://beesneezproaudio.com/product/elly-fet-microphone/))

Where the Elly differs is in the electronics. The original U 47's character is the result of the interaction between its capsule, VF 14 tube, BV 08 transformer, and complete circuit design. The Elly does not attempt to reproduce that combination exactly. Instead, the FET circuit provides a faster, more immediate response and modern solid-state reliability, while the K47 capsule provides much of the warmth and presence associated with the classic design.

This makes the Elly particularly interesting for engineers who like the U 47 tonal family but prefer the characteristics of a FET microphone. The Elly's fixed-cardioid configuration also makes it straightforward to use, while standard phantom power eliminates the need for a separate tube-microphone power supply.

In terms of sound, the Elly is designed to provide a rich, warm and rounded presentation with a controlled presence lift. The Elly has a near-linear upper-mid response with a gentle 2–3 dB lift above approximately 2 kHz and a gradual roll-off around 17 kHz. This is intended to provide presence and clarity without excessive harshness.

The Elly can therefore be particularly effective on vocals and spoken word, where the combination of warmth, presence and clarity can help a voice sit naturally in a mix. It can also be used on acoustic instruments, guitar, drums and other studio sources.

In short, the Elly is not intended to be a clone of a vintage U 47. It is better understood as a modern interpretation of the K47/U 47 sound: a transformer-balanced FET microphone that combines a BeesNeez K47 capsule with modern electronics to provide warmth, presence, clarity, and reliability without the maintenance and power requirements of a vintage tube microphone.

The BeesNeez Elly is designed to provide a clear and present vocal sound while keeping sibilance under control. Its BeesNeez K47 cardioid capsule has a near-linear upper-mid response with a gentle 2–3 dB presence lift above approximately 2 kHz, followed by a gradual roll-off around 17 kHz. This voicing is designed to provide clarity and definition without making the upper frequencies unnecessarily harsh or aggressive.

This makes the Elly particularly well suited to vocals, voice-over, narration, and spoken-word recording, where excessive "S", "T", and "SH" sounds can quickly become distracting.

The Elly's tonal balance also provides a useful combination of warmth, presence, and clarity. Rather than relying on an exaggerated high-frequency boost to create detail, the microphone is designed to maintain a natural upper-midrange presence while avoiding excessive brightness.

In practical use, this can make the Elly a particularly good choice for vocalists who tend to be naturally sibilant or for voices that become harsh when recorded with brighter condenser microphones. It can also reduce the amount of corrective EQ or de-essing required during mixing.

It is important to remember that sibilance is influenced by the vocalist, microphone position, room acoustics, and recording technique as well as the microphone itself. The Elly is not intended to eliminate sibilance completely. Instead, its frequency response is designed to provide clarity without excessive high-frequency harshness.

For particularly sibilant voices, we still recommend using good microphone technique and, when necessary, a pop filter or de-esser. However, for many voices the Elly can provide a naturally smooth starting point that requires less corrective processing.

In short, the Elly is designed to deliver presence and vocal detail without making sibilance unnecessarily prominent, making it a strong choice for singers, voice-over artists, podcasters, and other spoken-word applications.

Yes. The BeesNeez Elly is a large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone and requires 48V phantom power to operate its internal electronics.

Phantom power is supplied by an audio interface, mixing console, microphone preamp, or other compatible recording equipment through the balanced XLR cable. Make sure phantom power is switched on before recording with the Elly.

  1. Archer (verified owner) –

I was looking for a neumann-style large diaphragm condenser for vocals. I liked the sound of u47 over u87, but I wanted to avoid a tube mic because I find them a bit wooly in the lower mids.
I think this mic is v good. I’ve only used it on vocals so far. Here are the main points:
    – The sound is very professional – clarity of FM radio without the sterility
    – Sibilance/proximity effect is not particularly noticeable…de-essing is not a major concern in post-production.
    – When recording a vocalist, it is very easy to get a good workflow going quickly. The mic tends to sound very sonorous / present in headphones, so performances are generally better and more consistent. additionally, less time spent tweaking settings – it tends to sound good pretty quickly – makes mixing easier
    – In my experience, cheaper condensers tend to distort around 10khz if the singer is raspy. once the signal is distorted, it’s very hard to remove, especially if it’s mixed with sibilance. this hasn’t been a problem at all with this microphone.
    – low noise – measured about -90dbfs going into a jlm tg500 set at 20db gain.

Comparison to some other FET mics
    – akg 451b, vintage ck1 capsule (1980). there is a similar clarity in both microphones. the elly magnifies things to a greater extent. I would reach for it if i wanted the vocals to sit right up front. 451, in comparison, is thinner and a bit lighter, and usually needs a bit more eq/compression etc to make the vocals sound larger
    – akg 414 (2013). 414 is more clinical/sterile, hypersensitive to midrange detail, seems to have a cleaner sub-bass extension, but is harder to get to sit within a mix because it can sometimes sound too detailed. In comparison, the elly is detailed without being overbearing, more forgiving of nasality, and the lower mids have a subtle saturation which can be pushed quite a lot with a compressor. obviously both great mics.

    High recommend!

I spent months searching for the “perfect microphone” for my podcasts, voiceovers, and video projects. I wanted a rich, warm sounding microphone with a good deal of clarity and which didn’t sound sibilant. More challenging was the fact that I wanted to find something in the sub $500 USD range that sounded like a microphone 2-3 times the price. Enter Beesneez, who I discovered by accident as I was browsing Gearslutz and a few other audio forums.

    Packaging
The items came securely rolled in several layers of bubble tape. There is no presentation box or case, but I believe that the absence of these luxuries is what allows them to sell the Studio version of the Elly at less than half the cost of the Producer series Elly. And since they share the same internal circuity, you’re getting a very expensive sound with a minimalist package.

    Appearance
The microphone itself is much more attractive in person than its picture suggests. It feels very solid and has an appearance I would describe as “rugged elegance.” It’s a small, but weighty mic. The shock mount provides an extremely tight fit; your Elly will not be slipping out of this shock mount anytime soon. The shock mount is an attractive burnished silver. The only negatives with the mount are that the interior lining appears to be a felt-like tape, which can peel back rather easily and it takes 2 people to get the microphone in and out of the mount; it’s that tight. I ordered the Rycote Universal Shock Mount with the integrated pop filter as a replacement for the shock mount and it works perfectly.

    Sound
What can I say? The hype is real. This is an absolutely gorgeous sounding microphone. It is very reminiscent of some tube mics that I have used with noticeable warmth and richness. I would describe the sound as very full, but with the clarity any voiceover artist seeks in the upper range. It has an emphasized midrange presence that really flatters the spoken word. At less than $500, this is microphone is an absolute steal and I would unreservedly recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality microphone, especially for the spoken word.

    Final Thoughts
Beesneez represent one of the best deal in high end microphones I have ever seen. Their responsiveness to customer inquiries and updates to the shipping process could certainly be improved, but considering the quality of the microphone and the price point at which it is offered, it’s a small price to pay.
