Frequently Asked Questions

The B87iC has a smaller body than the B87i, which makes it easy to handle in tight spaces. Sonically, they both have the same tone, but significantly the iC-version features a 8dB higher output and an even lower self-noise. The tradeoff is that the iC is limited to a fixed cardioid polar pattern and lacks the pad and low cut filter.
While the tone and character of the microphone is true to the original U87i, the Strip-Wound Mu-Metal Toroidal transformer in the BeesNeez B87i introduces a range of specific benefits: (1) The transient response is improved compared to the vintage microphone; (2) it has increased headroom and lower distortion, leading to a tighter and better controlled low end; (3) it has a cleaner, more transparent top end, ensuring smooth and airy highs; (4) significantly, the BeesNeez B87i also has 3dB less self noise. This means it’s got the clarity of a modern microphone, but the vintage character of the original.
The U87 was introduced by Neumann in 1967 and became one of the most recognised solid-state studio condenser microphones in the world. It carried forward much of the large-diaphragm, multi-pattern studio concept associated with the U67, but replaced the valve amplifier with FET electronics. This made the microphone more convenient, more consistent, and compatible with phantom-powered studio systems. The U87 offered cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 polar patterns, along with pad and low-cut options, making it a flexible studio workhorse. Its importance comes from its combination of practicality, recognisable tonal balance, and widespread adoption in professional studios. For many engineers, the U87 became a benchmark reference for voice, vocal, and general-purpose studio condenser recording.

Yes. The BeesNeez B87i is a large-diaphragm, multi-pattern FET condenser microphone and requires 48V phantom power to operate its internal electronics.

Phantom power is supplied by an audio interface, mixing console, microphone preamp, or other compatible recording equipment through the microphone cable. Make sure phantom power is switched on before recording with the B87i.

  1. Ben (verified owner) –

Extremely pleased with this mic. Has quickly become my go to. I find mixing vocals and guitars tracked with this being easier. Particularly vocals. Warms mids, but can still be shaped. Love this product. Will likely need a second.

  2. Jon (verified owner) –

Simply stunning vocals float and sit where they should, acoustic guitars sound natural.

  3. Rob Bravery –

Great sounding mic! Warm mids and a smooth top end. Sounds like a 70s Neumann and the build quality is excellent for the money

  4. Derek Benjamin (verified owner) –

    The microphone itself is amazing!
I love the build quality and the sounds is great.

My only gripe is the shockmount. Its a pretty cheap one with pressure clamps. Can’t turn it upside down reliably. There are threads on the bottom, but it doesn’t fit any shockmount threads I’ve tried (a wide variety] and i can’t seem to find any dimensions or thread size anywhere. I’ve emailed more than once to beezneez and haven’t had a reply about the mount thread size. Would be great to get an answer

  5. Johnathan Underwood (verified owner) –

The secret sauce, I a SHOCKED its only this much, when it sounds this good. I have only used it on guitar and voice, and it is that beautiful 87 sound, without being harsh. Totally compares with any Neumann U87 I’ve used. I wasn’t expecting to like it on my voice, since my voice is quite thin, but no, it sounds beautiful, very intimate and detailed. I will absolutely be using it on any quiet capture recordings, and is absolutely perfect for anyone needing an 87. Along side owning lots of neumann products, I will still be reaching for this mic over them on alot of applications!
