After listening to various Youtube reviews where they blind test u87 clones (and a real Neumann) microphone, I came to the realisation that this was a flawed measure of the quality comparison tonally. Youtube loves to compress those files and my monitor speakers would sound different to the environment they were recorded in. So that leaves three other crucial factors – build quality, schematics and components. Since Beesneez are boutique manufacturers, using NOS components where appropriate, hand-wired point to point, laser machined…and not made in China; there was no other reasonable option but to go with an Aussie made family business who have crafted these types of microphones for over a quarter of a century. All their microphones pass a rigorous QA analysis, approx. eight times per mic.

The microphone came extremely well packed (and on time), in a Beeneez embossed case, with the professional shock mount.

This mic is not their cheapest nor their most expensive, yet totally affordable and tonally amazing, I imagine any legit audiophile/sonic guru would be hard pressed to distinguish this from an original u87i in a live studio test.

I can not recommend this company enough for their customer service, build quality, and microphones with incredible sonic characteristics. That’s why they are the Bees Nees of microphones.

    Superb… I cannot recommend this enough :)

  4. Gert-Jan van der Hout (verified owner) –

This is a great mic that problably outclasses lots of other U87 clones. I have used it in the past months as a (male) vocal mic mainly. It is very smooth and can get a tad dark in the upper mids. Handles EQ very well though. No sibilance problems. I’m always curious about the best mic – preamp combinations and a little to my surprise, the BU87 had a wonderful sound when combined with a (UAD) V76. Very Beatles-like vocals instantly. This surprised me because in my experience this preamp doesn’t work well with a lot of others mics. Works very good for backing vocs and for lead vocs – depending on song and singer of course. Absolute recommendations for the BU87. Minor criticism is it can get a bit ‘grainy’ when heavily compressed, but this may be due to the mic-preamp combination as well. I give five stars for the mic. Regarding customer service and comnunications I am less satisfied. According to the website when I ordered it, the mic came with a box. I didn’t get the box, not even when I asked for it after the purchase. Well, it’s only a box, I know, but that’s one star less for poor customer service.

Tested it out at NAMM 2023 and blew away by it. The sound is going for the vintage U87 , very warm, and clarity top end without being harsh in the mid-range like the 87AI. I’m actually putting my 87 AI on sale after purchased this. Great products from Beesneez

  6. QGU –

I recently managed to get hold of one of these amazing microphones. I was blown away by the quality of sound. I have owned quite a few expensive mics like TLM 49, TLM 102, 103, TLM 193, Sennheisers and 100’s of other Mics. What made Beesneez BU87i C special is the way it handles the mids, how sweet it sounds without going overboard. It’s a pleasing to the ears mic and you wont get mic tired from it like you do with the majority of mics around. I have tried a Vintage U87 and a modern U87i and the Beesnezz is so close in my opinion to the Vintage tone which I like. It rocks on Instruments specifically but great on Vocals as well. Love it. If in doubt dont be just get one.

  7. Rick (verified owner) –

I’m really glad that I purchased this mic. I have had problems with consonants peaking through the recordings and this mic helps with that without sounding dull. I can use large amounts of compression if I like without destroying the signal. It only makes the sound better compared to my other mics. (I have more than 70 mics, some about 4000 American dollars).

  8. Wes (verified owner) –

This is my go to microphone now. Purchased in the last few months, I’ve been trying it on everything and have always found a great sound.

Compared to other clones I have, this is definitely my favorite U87 clone. I really like the 3D effect it has on the mids, just has a way of bringing things to life. Great low end and smooth highs. Love it on vocals, and is a great room mic for drums and guitar. Truly great on any source.

    Can’t recommend this microphone enough.

AMAZING MIKE MANY THANKS ARO FRANCE

  10. Eric Patenaude (verified owner) –

The BU87i C is by far the best microphone I’ve ever purchased. It’s all I could wish for!
But there’s an advice I’d like to offer future buyers: Don’t skimp on the shockmount! Take the Producer Series shockmount, It’s worth very penny and is worlds apart from the Studio Series one.

Very happy with this Microphone couldn’t be happier.
    Would recommend!

A wonderfully made microphone that fits the sound I’ve been trying to find for years!

I am a freelance voice actor and hobbyist singer. I have a baritone voice with sharp sibilant ‘s’ sounds. My chest voice goes as low as 55 Hz (A1) and as high as 440 Hz (A4). For me, this microphone (clone body) offers a fantastic dynamic range and natural clarity!

When 6-12 inches off of the microphone, I hear a natural “roll-off” starting around 100 Hz, which helps open up the sound, reduce rumble, and gives me a very natural and clear narration or character reading. At about 2-6 inches from the capsule, the proximity effect does a good job of grabbing those lower frequencies without sounding muddy, bloated, or “boomy” for a more “in-your-face” intimate sound!

One of my biggest problems with modern mics is that they all insist on having an extended bass response and “presence” boost around 6-12 kHz, which on my voice, requires explicit attention to reducing the bass and running some kind of de-esser with careful tuning. THIS microphone produces exactly what I want from my recordings! It has a much more natural sounding clear and crisp top-end without hitting my DAW with harsh ‘esses,’ ‘tees,’ or ‘effs.’ The low end is also perfect for my preferences, as I would rather emphasize the bass in post or with an outboard EQ, rather than have to TAME and FIX the bass.

My only real “issue” is with the mids, which… isn’t really an issue. I’ve always been aware of the classic U87 “mid-forward” sound and, to Mr. Sneesby’s credit on this clone, it’s also present here! A little EQ around 700-1100 Hz, or a multi-band compressor, can be perfect for reducing that unwanted “boxy” sound or “honk” in your vocal/ instrument recordings (less of an issue on females, higher voices, and brighter-toned instruments).

Moving on from the things I hear, I want to mention the thing I DON’T… Which is excessive noise! The self-noise on this clone is very low and clean. When I’m monitoring softer narration at higher gain, it always makes me smile how quiet the signal is when I first put on my headphones. Now, low self-noise isn’t unique to the BU87i C, but it’s not something you get with every microphone! So kudos to Ben for the wonderful circuit!

Lastly, I want to mention the build quality! To me, it’s understated, minimalist, utilitarian, and just about as clean as it could be. It looks ready to work, with the only splash of color being the vibrant red emblem on the body’s obverse side. I would call the color “gunmetal grey,” and while I personally wish it was slightly lighter, I’m just glad it’s not “tactical black.” The mesh on the head-basket is study with a slight amount of flex and does a superb job at stopping most “flippant” breaths and pops, as well as working decently to stop mild air currents from AC or Central Heat during live use.

Honestly, for the money? I think this microphone destroys the competition! Being a single-pattern mic, it might not suit everyone’s needs. But: if you’re looking for a Cardiod Condenser in this budget? This is a SERIOUS win and is WELL worth any kind of wait time for building and shipping. If you’re looking at microphones upwards of 2-3x this price? Still keep this in your short-list! The only real “downside” is the lack of features (multi-pattern, hi-pass, lo-pass, pads, etc), so if you’re needing a mic that can “do it all?” This might not be for you. But as a cardioid condenser, it’s a tried-and-tested sound that’s being offered from an awesome family in Australia at a price that’s perfectly agreeable!

    Cheers, and Happy Recording :)
    Stanton Nichols

This is my first purchase from Beesneez. I bought a pair of the BU87i’s and so far have been very pleased with them. They’re replacing a pair of Mojave FET mics that had a harder and less forgiving midrange by comparison. These are just silky smooth and sound immediately “classic” on every instrument I’ve tried them on. They’re a little “honky” on my voice personally, but I believe that’s part and parcel of the u87 “mid forward” sound, and the character of my own voice. On thinner female vocals they’ve been excellent.

  14. Scott Hammond (verified owner) –

If you’re fine with cardioid only, this mic is a pretty uncanny 87. Smooth and musical with slightly recessed highs and a very usable proximity effect that gets warm but never too big (clone body). And the price? Wow! 24 hours after getting mine I ordered another. I have a feeling Beesneez will be getting a lot more of my business in the future.
