BN2 Multi-Pattern Capsule

The Evolution of Transducer Precision

The BN2 Multi-Pattern is a result of a “ground-up” design philosophy—an evolution based on decades of studying the physics of legendary transducers. Rather than replicating a single vintage model, the BN2 combines the best attributes of time-alignment, phase coherency, and pressure-gradient technology into a single, high-performance package.

The “Kodachrome™” Sound

Described by designer Ben Sneesby as “Kodachrome™” in character, the BN2 offers a creamy, musical, and elegantly balanced response. It is “cochlear linear,” meaning it captures audio with the same natural perspective as the human ear. Because the capsule is naturally balanced through mechanical precision, it requires no electronic sculpting or negative feedback, making it an ideal partner for pure Class A signal chains.

Advanced Architecture

The BN2 Multi-Pattern consists of two expertly tuned capsules joined via a central vented chamber. This unique architecture ensures that the time alignment and phase coherency remain perfect across every pickup pattern. By utilizing vented technology—a technique typically found in high-end small-diaphragm condensers—the BN2 allows the diaphragm to move with absolute freedom, capturing fast transients and subtle micro-dynamics with ease.

Key Features:

  • Edge-Terminated Design: Allows for maximum diaphragm displacement and a more reactive, detailed response.
  • Aluminum Styroflex Diaphragm: A rigid aluminum coating provides incredible linearity in the lower frequencies, ensuring the bottom end is authoritative yet controlled.
  • Machined Precision: Built using advanced in-house injection molding, the high-temperature plastic and brass components are machined as a single unit, ensuring tolerances within ±0.5 dB.
  • Versatile Performance: While excellent for all sources, thanks to its ability to perfectly balance the harmonics with the fundamental, it shines on voices and instruments with complex and rich overtones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Edge-terminated and centre-terminated capsules differ in where the diaphragm is electrically connected and mechanically referenced. In a centre-terminated capsule, the conductive diaphragm is typically connected near the centre, which is associated with designs such as the M7 and K47 families. In an edge-terminated capsule, the diaphragm connection is made around the outer edge, as seen in CK12-style designs. These construction choices influence diaphragm behaviour, tuning options, pattern behaviour, and the final tone of the microphone. It is too simple to say one type is better. Centre-terminated capsules are often associated with strong midrange and classic vocal weight, while edge-terminated capsules are often associated with openness and extended detail, but the actual result depends on the whole capsule and microphone design.
