Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, in many cases this is possible. Customers have specifically asked about fitting the BeesNeez CK12 into AKG C414 B-ULS and C414 EB P48 microphones.

BeesNeez now has the CK12 available on an adapter so it can be installed into a 414-style microphone. Check it out here.

Gold and aluminium diaphragm coatings are conductive layers applied to the thin diaphragm material, allowing the capsule to operate electrically.

Gold is widely used because it is highly conductive, chemically stable, and resistant to oxidation. These properties make it an excellent choice for microphone capsule diaphragms where long-term stability and consistency are important.

Aluminium can also be used as a conductive diaphragm coating and may be selected for specific manufacturing requirements or desired tonal characteristics. However, aluminium is generally less chemically inert than gold and can be more susceptible to oxidation.

It is important to understand that the coating material is only one component of the overall diaphragm system. A capsule's performance is influenced by many factors, including:

  • Coating thickness
  • Diaphragm mass
  • Adhesion of the coating
  • Base film material
  • Diaphragm tension
  • Backplate design
  • Capsule geometry
  • Overall capsule tuning

For customers, the most important consideration is that diaphragm coating should not be judged by the metal name alone. The quality of a microphone capsule is determined by how all of these elements work together.

A well-designed capsule should ultimately be evaluated by its stability, consistency, reliability, and sonic performance rather than simply by whether the diaphragm is coated with gold or aluminium.

This is a great question. While this is not an exhaustive list, the following are some of the most relevant microphones and microphone platforms that may benefit from installing a high-quality BeesNeez CK12 capsule.

The CK12 is one of the most influential large-diaphragm condenser capsules ever developed. Originally created by AKG, the CK12 became the defining capsule of the legendary AKG C12 and was subsequently used in microphones including the Telefunken ELA M 250/251 and early versions of the AKG C414. The original CK12 is known for its extended, detailed high-frequency response, smooth character, and excellent transient response. BeesNeez describes its CK12 as a historically accurate recreation of the original multi-chambered AKG design. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

The BeesNeez CK12 is specifically designed for C12 and ELA M 251-style microphones and DIY builds. It can also be used in compatible multi-pattern microphone circuits where the capsule's dual-diaphragm design can be properly utilized. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Some microphones and microphone platforms that may benefit include:

  • AKG — C12, C12A, C12B and early C414 models originally equipped with a CK12 capsule
  • Telefunken — ELA M 250 and ELA M 251
  • AKG — C412, which continued the CK12 design into a solid-state microphone
  • AKG — early C414 COMBO and C414 EB models fitted with the original CK12 capsule
  • ELA M 251-style microphones — modern reproductions and compatible replacement projects
  • C12-style microphones — modern reproductions and DIY builds
  • DIY C12-style microphones — tube builds designed around the original 6072/12AY7-style circuit
  • DIY ELA M 251-style microphones — builds using compatible 6072/AC701-style circuitry and multi-pattern operation

The AKG C12 is the most obvious application for a BeesNeez CK12. Introduced in 1953, the C12 used AKG's new dual-backplate CK12 capsule and became one of the defining tube condenser microphones of the era. The capsule's multi-chamber construction was a major part of its distinctive sound. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

The Telefunken ELA M 250 and ELA M 251 are equally important CK12 applications. Telefunken commissioned AKG to develop the ELA M 250 after the U 47 was withdrawn from Telefunken distribution. The resulting microphone incorporated the CK12 capsule, with the ELA M 251 adding a third figure-8 pattern to the cardioid and omni-directional options. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

The early AKG C414 is another particularly interesting candidate. The original C414 COMBO, introduced in 1971, used the CK12 capsule along with a solid-state version of the C12A electronics. The original CK12 continued to be used in early C414 variants before AKG eventually replaced it with easier-to-manufacture nylon capsule designs. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

This distinction is important when discussing C414 microphones. Not every C414 contains a CK12 capsule. AKG changed the capsule design during the C414's production history, and later models used several different capsule designs. Consequently, replacing a later C414 capsule with a BeesNeez CK12 should be considered a modification rather than simply a restoration to the microphone's original specification. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

For owners of older C12, C414, or ELA M 251-style microphones, a BeesNeez CK12 can be particularly attractive when the original capsule has been damaged, degraded, or replaced with a modern capsule that does not provide the desired tonal character.

For DIY builders, the BeesNeez CK12 is especially well suited to C12 and ELA M 251-style projects. BeesNeez states that its CK12 is designed as a direct replacement for the AKG C12 and is also intended for DIY C12 and 251-style microphone builds. The capsule includes the saddle, mount, and wiring required for installation. :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

The CK12's dual-diaphragm construction also makes it particularly appropriate for multi-pattern microphone designs. When correctly integrated into a suitable circuit, the capsule can provide omni-directional, cardioid, and figure-8 operation, along with the intermediate patterns available from continuously variable polarization. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}

As with any capsule replacement, compatibility should be evaluated before installation. The microphone's polarization voltage, capsule dimensions, mounting arrangement, headbasket, circuit topology, transformer, and pattern-selection system should all be considered. A CK12 is not simply a universal replacement for any large-diaphragm condenser capsule.

It is also important to distinguish a genuine CK12-style multi-chamber capsule from capsules that are merely marketed as "CK12-style." The original CK12 was an unusually complex design, consisting of many individual components and requiring substantial precision during manufacture. The BeesNeez CK12 is specifically designed to reproduce this multi-chamber construction and is manufactured and hand-lapped in Australia. :contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}

For microphones and DIY projects where the goal is to achieve the classic C12, ELA M 251, or early C414 character, the BeesNeez CK12 can be an excellent capsule choice. Its extended, detailed top end and smooth presentation make it particularly well suited to vocals, acoustic instruments, drum overheads, and other applications where clarity and openness are desired. :contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}

The CK12 is a legendary large-diaphragm condenser capsule originally developed in Vienna in the early 1950s. Its intricate brass-ring construction, edge-terminated dual diaphragms, and complex multi-chambered acoustic design helped create the open, detailed, and airy sound it is famous for.

The BeesNeez CK12 is carefully crafted to recreate these important mechanical and acoustic characteristics, with precision-machined components, carefully aligned diaphragms, and a smooth, extended top end. To learn more, read our Learning Centre article: What Makes the AKG CK12 Capsule Legendary?

  1. CHARLES AUSTIN (verified owner) –

    Put this CK12 capsule in a MP V251 circuit with 2 capacitors changes and upgraded transformer based on AI recommendations for a ELAM 251 sonic sound and it is heavenly. Sounds highly detailed with nice bottom compression, using TAD 6072a tube and could not be more impressed. It grabs every nuance of sound and gives it a smooth articulate finished polished sound. I hesitated purchase initially due to the cost, but really glad I splurged on this one.

  2. Brad Newsom –

    I’d say this is the best replacement CK12 currently available in 2025, definitely the smoothest CK-12 you can get today. I have it installed in a Bouchard 251 copy in a Beesneez body and grill. I will say mine is less bright than a lot of other current offerings, but with a little 16k added you get a signal with a nice smooth sweet detailed top. I’m thinking about getting a pair for some other mics.

  3. Daniel Frank (verified owner) –

    Replacement for my 251 microphone. WOW all I can say. Gave clarity with this mic that I have never heard before. Just wonderful product great shipping and smooth service. Would recommend to anyone.!

  4. John (verified owner) –

    This is such a sweet sounding capsule. I put this CK12 in a micparts 251 circuit and it really is one of the best sounding mics in my locker. The lows are nice and tight not too subby, the top end is super extended and is not harsh whatsoever. When recording vocals my Deesser hits maybe 1db. Been using this capsule on vocals mostly, but also gets used on acoustic guitar and drum overhead. The crack of a snare never sounded better. Everyone raves about the TC capsule, but they are impossible to get a hold of these days, and I’m fine with that because I don’t think it could actually be better than this one. There is a second 251 on my bench ready to be built with a Beesneez CK12.

    Similar to Max, I replaced the capsule in a 251 style clone with the BeesNeez CK12 capsule. It completely changed the sound of the mic, it’s night and day! The old capsule was very accentuated in the high end, like a tilt from 1k upwards which made it sound quite harsh. With the BeesNeez capsule, it’s balanced with a smooth top end.

    A beautiful sounding warm capsule, expertly built!

    Best top end I’ve ever heard.

    I installed this capsule in a 251-style mic I built from a kit. I used to think the Chinese capsule that came with it (which is really a K67 design made to look like a CK12) sounded pretty good, but next to the Beesneez CK12 it’s tinny and harsh. This capsule has taken the mic it’s in to a completely new level, and I’m sure I’ll be finding it much more useful than I once did. Don’t take a risk on a cheap dodgy CK12-style capsule, spend a few extra bucks with Beesneez and get the real deal.
